"Cassadaga Camp History"
In Hydesville Ney York in December 11, 1947 they moved into their home. In March 31,1948 the day before April fools Leah (Ann) Margaret (Maggie) Catherine (Kate) They had moved in after prior tenant Michael Weaken moved out. Kate said "Mr splitfoot do as i do" she spated her fingers 1/2/3 and then Margaret said "Now do as I do. At that time the peddler that was killed in the home Charles B. Rosna talked to them He stayed at the house 5 years prior when he was killed. That started the birth of modern Spiritualism. "George P. Colby" He came to Florida in 1875 at the time he was suffering from TB at the age of 27. He was lead though the wilderness with his followers which were associated to the American Spiritualist Association the movement was founded in the 1840's in Chautauqua, New York. They traveled by rail from Wisconsin to Jacksonville and then by steamer on the St. Johns river to Blue Springs Landing. This was a job for George Colby sick with TB traveling across country and walking miles into the woods to find this place all with being sick. He was lead here by his 3 guides Seneca, The Philosopher and the Unknown to where the camp sits today. T.D. Giddings followed George Colby to Cassadaga he was a medium from Eau Clara Wisconsin which so were the Underhill's. Emma Huff took one look at the place and said that it looks so much like Cassadaga New York and named the town Cassadaga which means "Rocks beneath the water" When rocks get washed over with water it takes off the sharp edges and smoothes the rocks out. Same as Spiritualism It will put you into the stream of your own life and as you look at it and clear it you will find that the edges are gone and life will run smooth. In 1895 Ann Stevens build a house on 2 acres directly behind the Webster Hotel that was build by her half brother George Webster which later burned down she was a believer from Michigan. Today the Ann Stevens House is still there running as a Bed and Breakfast in Lake helen. In 1895 George Colby gives 34 acres to the Camp" The word camp was meant a gathering of Religious Groups. Other Settlements of the time the Shakers and the Koreshan Unity were established and failed to survive on part of the Utopian goals of the Organizations. George P. Colby (1848-1933) George P. Colby, the founder of the Spiritualist camp at Cassadaga, Florida, was born to Baptist parents in Pike, New York, on January 6, 1848. Eight years later, the family moved to Minnesota. At the age of 12, young George was baptized, an event that became life changing, but in a most unexpected manner. It seemed to catalyze this psychic abilities. One of the first events was his reception of a message that he would one day found a Spiritualist camp in the southern United States. In the meantime, he became known locally for his healing and clairvoyant abilities. In 1867 he formally left the church and became an itinerant medium visiting various Spiritualist centers. He made his living through the pubic demonstration of his mediumistic skills. Like many mediums, he had acquired a set of spirit guides; among them was a Native American who called himself Seneca. In 1875 Seneca directed Colby to go to Wisconsin where he would meet T. D. Giddings, another medium. Together they would travel by rail to Jacksonville, Florida, then the end of the railroad line, and search out a location that Seneca had described. Traveling inland, they finally found the spot, notable for its seven small hills. Colby settled in the area, but continued to travel the country as a medium. Finally, in 1880 he filed for a homestead grant and in 1884 was awarded 145 acres. However, the fulfillment of the original message would wait until after the formation of the National Spiritualist Association (now the National Spiritualist Association of Churches) in 1893. Colby attended the initial meeting and the following year, assisted by people from Lily Dale, the Spiritualist camp in New York, organized the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association. Colby donated 35 of his acres (later adding 20), and the initial meeting of the association was held in his home. Colby subsequently became one of the resident mediums and lecturers, but still continued to travel during the off-season. He also enjoyed some prosperous years, and having never married, he adopted several orphan boys and saw to their education. However, in his later years, as his health failed, he lost all of the little he had accumulated and at the time of his death, July 27, 1933, he was bankrupt. He had no family, and the association had to give money to see to his remains. So no matter if I live in Cassadaga or Tennessee I still feel God in every step that I take and that has been all my life. I listen to God and follow in great expectation of what God has in store for me. When my guide Jeff told me to move to Tennessee and we were told you have not seen nothing yet I believe God. In our lifes we need to trust that God knows where and how to get us there. If we just listen to our hearts and to the silence within each of us we do speak to God everyday. So now that I walk my waterfalls in Tennessee or walk by spirit pond I still know that God is walking with me. When you feel that life is giving you a curve or you feel that you are not moving on the path just know one thing God is still there. My dog Sadie and my cat Powder are getting into the move to the mountains and the quiet you feel here.
